Extra Information

What is Shinrin-Yoku?
1. Shinrin-Yoku is a Japanese practise that translates to Forest Bathing. Practitioners spend time in the forest, breathing, relaxing and opening their awareness to the energy of plants and animals that live there. This is not only a psychological experience but also a physical one.

2. Many trees in the forest release essential oils or phytoncides into the air. As we walk through the forest our bodies absorb these oils which provide a scientifically proven benefit to the human body including: reduced blood pressure, increase in natural killer cells (used to fight cancers), reduce the stress hormone Cortisol and reduce heart rate (ref Q. Li, ‘Effect of forest bathing trips on human immune function’, 2010).

5. Numerous articles, research papers and books can be found by searching for Shinrin-yoku or forest bathing for those looking for additional information on the activity. If you would like to experience this extraordinary activity booknow or email any questions you may have.
3. Psychological benefits can include, reduced stress, increased happiness, improved vigour, reduce anxiety and depression among other benefits (ref Park, et al, ’The physiological effects of Shinrin-yoku (taking in the forest atmosphere or forest bathing) : evidence from field experimentsin 24 forests across Japan’, 2010).

4. The practice was established by the Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (Tomohide Akiyama) to improve the health of the Japanese people. The Minister recognized that urban life had caused a separation between nature the people and that this needed to be repaired to allow Japanese citizens to enjoy a long healthy and balanced life.
